La Tabella restaurant on Botanic Road in Churchtown in Southport

Southport’s restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels are hoping to see their customers again soon after they were told to close again from (Thursday 31 December).

Venues across town reported being fully booked for New Year’s Eve.

But tonight will now be their last night for a while after Southport and the Liverpool City Region were moved up from Tier 2 to Tier 3 Covid restrictions.

The tougher new measures do allow hospitality businesses to provide takeaway, collection and delivery services for customers. But under the new measures announced in Parliament by Health Secretary Matt Hancock today they will not be allowed to welcome customers to dine in their premises until the rising Coronavirus figures are brought back under control and the Tier systems are reviewed.

Rob and Liz Smallman, owners of La Tabella restaurant in Churchtown, said: “Unfortunately we have to close our doors again tonight and can’t share a glass of fizz with our wonderful, loyal customers on New Year’s Eve.

“We wish you all lots of love and best wishes for a much happier and healthier new year where we can all eat, drink and laugh together again.

“Until then please stay safe and take good care of yourselves.”

Owners of The Office restaurant and bar on Hoghton Street said: “Well today’s news has just ended this year, with a fully booked restaurant. Fully prepped kitchen and stocked bar. To be told to close! A real low to end on.

“Sorry if you have a table booked tomorrow.

“And we wish you all the very best for 2021 from all of us at the Office restaurant.”

Julian Burgess, owner of the Tap and Bottles in Cambridge Arcade, said: “Gonna completely ignore the elephant in the room here, and tell you that the last online shop of 2020 is live.  Will be out delivering tomorrow.”
